Embracing the Deep Freeze: Insights from Freezer Burn
In the heart of a bone-chilling Texan night, where the cold cut through layers like a knife, I found myself at FreezerBurn — a local Burn event near Austin. Having previously danced on the sun-kissed Playa and reveled in the warmth and sometimes rain of several local Burns, this frosty escapade unfolded as a new and exhilarating chapter in my Burning Man adventures. Dressed for the Arctic, Dancing with Fervor: Freezer Burn, a local Burn event far removed from the desert sands, showcased an array of costumes that were not just expressions of creativity but also crucial shields against the biting cold. As I twirled and danced under the stars (SOOOOOO many we could see!), the freezing temperatures added a layer of challenge to the familiar rhythm of Burn events. Those of you who know me, cold weather is not my favorite. Conversations Amidst the Frost: Around crackling fires that fought valiantly against the deep freeze, conversations unfolded, mirroring the mission of Alive and Healing Now. Dialogues delved into the intricacies of wellness, navigating the unique journey of postmenopausal women, and the empowering transformations possible during this distinctive phase of life. Connections that Thawed the Chill: The real warmth of the night emanated not just from the fires but from the genuine connections forged in the midst of the bone-chilling cold. These conversations weren't mere exchanges; they were powerful catalysts for change, resonating deeply with the essence of guiding women through the postmenopausal journey. Alive and Healing Now: Defying the Freeze: In the midst of this frigid Texan night, I shared the spirit of Alive and Healing Now — a dedication to empowering women during the postmenopausal phase. This coaching practice isn't confined to nutrition and fitness; it's about asking the right questions, providing unwavering support, and offering a personalized roadmap to optimal health, even in the face of extreme challenges. Empowering Women in the Texan Tundra: The biting cold at Freezer Burn served as a metaphor for the challenges women face during postmenopause, a stark contrast to the scorching desert sands of the Playa. Yet, just as burners united to share warmth and understanding, Alive and Healing Now seeks to create a nurturing space for women, even in the heart of a Texan tundra. Lessons from the Deep Freeze: As the echoes of Freezer Burn linger in memory, I carry back not just tales of a bone-chilling Texan night but the warmth of connections and conversations that fuel my mission. In the realm of wellness coaching, the lessons from extreme environments resonate deeply — transformation happens when we brave the elements, connect with others, and commit to the journey of vibrant health, even in the face of a biting freeze. In the profound stage of post-menopause, I find myself navigating a landscape where physical changes challenge the resilience of my body. Muscles may appear to fade, and bones yearn for support, while the intricate dance of hormones subtly shifts. Yet, within these changes lies an empowering truth – post-menopause is not a decline but rather my time to thrive.
As the hormonal tempest settles, my mental landscape undergoes its own evolution. The mind gains newfound clarity, embracing wisdom and experience. Yes, there are challenges, but there's also resilience and adaptability, proving that my journey through post-menopause is one of continuous growth. Observing the shifts in my physical self, I emerge with a profound understanding of the importance of self-care. My body, once seen through the lens of societal expectations, becomes a canvas for self-love and acceptance. Post-menopause is the era to nourish, exercise, and cherish the vessel that carries a lifetime of stories. In this chapter of life, I seize the opportunity to redefine beauty, celebrating the uniqueness that time has etched into every line and curve. It's a time to embrace my individuality, letting go of societal pressures, and allowing authenticity to shine through. Post-menopause becomes a call to prioritize well-being, not just physically but also emotionally and spiritually. It's about cultivating resilience, fostering connections, and embracing the vibrant, authentic self that has weathered storms and emerged stronger. This phase is a canvas awaiting the strokes of new adventures, passions, and pursuits. It's my time to rekindle dreams, explore uncharted territories, and savor the richness of life's tapestry. Post-menopause is the moment to celebrate my journey and step into the fullness of my own unique and remarkable story. Thriving is not just a choice, but a testament to the strength and beauty that define this extraordinary chapter of my life. How do you think and feel about this time of life! Life is an unpredictable journey, full of twists and turns that keep us on our toes—literally in my case, considering I recently did my regular pilgrimage to Burning Man with a broken toe. Join me as I reflect on the unexpected adventures of the past year, from the eccentricity of Portland to the nostalgic Thanksgiving in Columbia, MO, and the pursuit of a Master's in Health and Wellness Coaching at the age of 60.
Burning Man Chronicles: This year's Burning Man was unlike any other, with the desert dust being replaced by unanticipated rain showers. Navigating the surreal landscape with a broken toe added an extra layer of challenge, but it turned out to be an unforgettable experience—one that taught me the resilience of both the human spirit and a well-constructed raincoat. Portland, the City of Eccentricities: Following the dusty trails of Burning Man, I found myself in the eclectic city of Portland. Known for its unique charm, I embraced the vibrant culture, explored the quirky neighborhoods, and indulged in the city's renowned culinary scene. The city's energy fueled my passion for health and wellness, setting the stage for the next chapter of my journey. Thanksgiving in Columbia, MO: Columbia holds a special place in my heart, as it's where I first entered the U.S. in my early thirties. Revisiting this city during Thanksgiving was a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Connecting with my first U.S. bestie, we reminisced, laughed, and even floated down a lazy river—a perfect way to celebrate the bonds that transcend time and distance. Academic Pursuits at 60: As I reveled in the memories of my past, the present was equally exciting. Pursuing a Master's in Health and Wellness Coaching (May 2024 is graduation! :) ), complemented by an AA in Fitness Technology from Portland Community College and a year-certificate in Nutrition Coaching from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, my goal is to empower others in their wellness journey. It's never too late to invest in our well-being and help others do the same. Upcoming Adventures: Life at 60 is proving to be a time of renewal and exploration. With plans to discover a piece of South America, I'm setting my sights on Uruguay early next year. The anticipation of new experiences and cultural immersion fuels my adventurous spirit, proving that age is just a number. Celebrating 60 and Shredding: Oh, did I mention I celebrated my 60th birthday? It's a milestone that deserves recognition and gratitude for the years of lessons, laughter, and love. To mark this occasion, I embarked on a 6-week shred, a personal challenge to prioritize my physical well-being and embrace the journey of self-improvement. As I wrap up this whirlwind of a year, I can't help but marvel at the richness of life's tapestry. From dancing on a tricycle in the rain at Burning Man to reliving memories in Columbia, MO, and pursuing academic dreams at 60, every experience has shaped me into the person I am today. Life is indeed a journey worth celebrating, and I'm eagerly looking forward to the next chapter—full of surprises, growth, and, of course, a bit of adventure. Cheers to life at 60 and the many more years of discovery ahead! Class has started. Either Fall is still here, or spring has started; hard to tell. :)
As expected, sciences are hard for me. I remember why I am here, learning about the details of how the body works. That helps me relax into it a little, as I spend hours each day (literally), trying to get the joint actions and muscle performance knowledge into my brain. Off to the gym. Without movement, my thinker doesn't work as well as it does with. Joining classes is a good choice for me. Today? Zumba with a new instructor; I'm excited, Off to another day of adventures! Time flies. In 2 weeks I get to start my exercise science class. I am understanding how much it and all my classes will help me with improving your health. Learning the body... it'll take a lifetime, of course. ACC has much to offer, as does the University, how wonderful is that?
Meanwhile, "winter" is here, and am in love with it! I moved here to be in a better climate for my health, and I certainly do not miss the constant grey drizzle gloom of the NW! I miss the amazing city of Portland, and the awake individuals there, yet I am overjoyed to be able to live in this weather now! The joints are grateful. I may begin working with Silver Sneakers soon, which will not take away my time from my personal clients, of course. It's just always good to educate myself in all ways possible, so applying there is another way to continue my exploration of health, fitness, the body, nutrition,... LIFE. It's not easy being "middle-aged," as people seem to call it. One advantage, for me, is knowing that if I keep moving, things will always feel better. Chronic pain and illness need not stop us from living. Let's remember that, and take it one day at a time. |
